Scotland’s Cafes are the icing on the cake

Over 200 of the best Scottish cafés are joining forces with other tourism businesses around the country to help give visitors a sweeter taste of Scotland.

The new Scottish Café Days website shows visitors where they can get a great cuppa and cake while on holiday as well as promoting the attractions and activities they can experience in the surrounding area.

VisitScotland has designed the £40,000 campaign to encourage cafés and other tourism businesses to work closely to promote each others’ services to visitors through personal recommendations and information on a new website, www.visitscotland.com/cafedays.

Recent research with visitors to Scotland has revealed that over half of those surveyed had visited a tea shop or café on their holiday in Scotland.*

The campaign was launched by GMTV’s Glasgow born weathergirl Andrea McLean at the Birsay Bay Tearoom on Orkney. Andrea said:

“Scotland’s a great place to visit if you want to escape the hustle and bustle and try a new activity and it’s so quick and easy to get here.

“When I visit, it is always good to get personal recommendations from local people about what to do and see and that’s what is great about VisitScotland’s new Café Days campaign.

“There’s no better place to relax and unwind than over a hot cuppa and cake in one of Scotland’s best cafés. If visitors know that they can also get great advice about what they can do and see in the area over the café counter it will help make Scotland a must visit destination come rain or shine!”

All the cafés on the new VisitScotland site were nominated by people who have spent time visiting the individual cafés and the things to do and see on their doorsteps.

Tourism Minister Jim Mather said, â€œWe need to look beyond the traditional and towards more innovative approaches, as many Scottish tourism businesses are doing, if we are to continue to attract tourists to Scotland time and time again. This campaign does just that, bringing small businesses together to attract tourists in a new and exciting way.

“I can think of nothing better than a day enjoying some of the most spectacular scenery the world has to offer, followed by a visit to a friendly nearby café for a hot drink and a snack. This campaign has my full support”

More than 800 businesses (cafés and activity providers) are promoted on the new website.
