Second drone sighting causes further flight disruption at Singapore
Operations at Singapore’s Changi Airport have been disrupted for a second time in a week by unauthorised drone flying.
In the latest incident 18 flights were delayed and seven diverted due to a combination of the drone and also bad weather.
Last week, one runway had to be temporarily closed at Changi following drone sightings, causing dozens of flights to be delayed.
In a statement today, Singapore’s civil aviation authority CAAS said: "Fifteen departures and three arrivals were delayed and seven flights were diverted due to bad weather and unauthorised drone activities.
"Members of the public are reminded that the authorities take a serious view of errant operations of unmanned aircraft which may pose threats to aviation or endanger the personal safety of others."~
CAAS said that last Wednesday 37 flights were delayed and one was diverted after confirmed drone sightings close to Changi Airport.
The agency said investigations are ongoing. Offenders face fines of up to $20,000 Singapore dollars (about £11,500) or 12 months’ in prison.
Drone sightings forced the temporary closure of Gatwick airport for a total of 33 hours last December, disrupting around 140,000 passengers.
Both Gatwick and Heathrow have since invested in anti-drone technology.
