Security scare leads to Manchester Airport evacuation
A security alert led to an evacuation at Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2 last night.
Passengers and staff were told to leave and ‘stay away from glass’ when an unattended bag was found in the landside check-in area.
Unconfirmed reports on social media claimed the bag had tested positive for an explosive substance, but the airport later said it posed no threat.
Manchester Police superintendent Mark Kennyit said the terminal was evacuated to ensure the safety of staff and the public.
"We contained the situation and dealt with the suspicious bag as quickly as possible so there was minimal disruption to the airport and the public. I would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation," he added.
Manchester Airport said the safety and security of passengers and staff is paramount and added; "We appreciate the patience of those affected."
