Selfie verification now required for Malaysian Grab users
Ride hailing giant Grab has a message to all customers in Malaysia: No selfie, no ride.
Grab will be making it mandatory for all users to verify their identity with a selfie by July 12 in order to book rides.
The one-time identity verification is part of the Malaysian transport ministry’s regulations which come into force next month.
Grab says it will make the platform safer for both drivers and riders.
The company says user’s personal information will remain secure and not be shared with drivers or any external companies.
Grab’s facial recognition technology was instrumental in the recent arrest of two suspects accused of the robbery and murder of a Grab driver.
The system is in addition to separate e-hailing regulations which require customers to submit a photo of their identity card or passport when registering for an account with Grab or other ride hailing service.
