Selling off the cutlery…

One of New York’s most famous hotels – The Plaza – is selling off almost its entire contents to the public, before a 350 million refurbishment.

Before converting the hotel, which is built in the style of a French chateau, more than 5,000 dinner plates, 3,000 lamps and 100,000 pieces of cutlery will have to be sold, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Among the other items on offer are ice buckets for $20, dressing gowns for $75, pillows for $20 and chandeliers from $350. The newspaper reports that there are so many items that the sale is expected to last around six weeks – and that is before the really valuable items are offered.

Proceeds from the sale will reportedly go towards the refurbishment, which will see the building converted into a much smaller hotel with 150 additional “top-end” apartments.
