September ATOL renewal round completed in ‘exceptionally difficult’ circumstances

Friday, 03 Oct, 2008 0

A total of 1,295 firms applied to renew their ATOLs in the September round.

Of these, 1,279 received decisions and 1,199 renewed on time, according to the Civil Aviation Authority.

Head of ATOL licensing Andy Cohen said: “The renewal was completed in exceptionally difficult circumstances for the industry and it is pleasing that the result achieved was comparable to previous renewals.

“The majority of firms that did not renew on time were Small Business ATOL holders.

“Due to the nature of their business, renewing on time is often less critical, but we expect most to renew shortly.”

This was the second renewal under the new ATOL Protection Contribution arrangements, in which most licence holders no longer have to provide a bond.

Following the failure of the XL Leisure Group last month, ATOL repatriated 83,000 passengers to the UK and estimates that a further 200,000 passengers will make claims for refunds.

*The list of the ATOLs that have not been renewed can be seen on the ATOL website at www.atol.org.uk.
