Sex tourism film angers Thai tourism leaders
Tourism leaders in Pattaya have slammed a German documentary which they say could harm its tourism recovery.
The documentary amplifies Pattaya’s reputation as a sex tourism destination.
It could be harmful as the tourist city has taken various measures in recent years to rid itself of its ‘sin city’ reputation.
The film was produced by German media company Deutsche Welle.
Head of the Thai Hotels Association (THA), Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi admits it has been hard for Pattaya to shake its image as the sex tourism capital.
While much has been achieved, the local government and tourism businesses should do more to promote travel by more diverse segments.
The city has made some strides in attracting more families and MICE business.
The documentary has been banned in Thailand.
“Pattaya is a melting pot that welcomes various segments, it is also one of the most successful Mice hubs,’ Marisa said.
She urged local authorities to make better use of zoning and be more responsible with granting entertainment licenses and extended opening hours.
