Shanghai tourist arrivals up sharply in 2025
Shanghai tourism rebounded strongly in 2025, welcoming 9.3 million inbound visitors.
Data from the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism showed inbound arrivals climbed nearly 40% year-on-year and enjoyed a strong year-end with December alone welcoming more than one million.
Overnight stays accounted for the largest share of inbound travel.
Arrivals from major source markets like South Korea more than doubled and visitor numbers from Russia increased significantly.
Thailand, Indonesia and Italy all saw increased visitation of over 50%.
Traditional source markets such as Singapore, Malaysia and Australia all had steady increases of more than 30%.
Overall, Shanghai’s accommodation market remained buoyant in 2025.
Star-rated hotels recorded a full-year occupancy rate of 65.86%, up 2% from a year earlier.
Five-star hotels’ average occupancy was 71.3%.
