She, she who has nothing, becomes godmum to Adonia

Singer Dame Shirley Bassey has been named as godmother to P&O Cruises’ newest ship Adonia.

The Diamonds Are Forever star is set to steal the limelight from the 710 passenger ship when she officiates at the naming ceremony on May 21 in Southampton.

Adonia bucks the trend for today’s new mega ships and has been designed to allow cruisers to visit smaller ports off the beaten cruise ship track.

Said Bassey: “I have had the most exciting career imaginable, but to be invited to be Godmother to a cruise ship is something very special and very personal.”

P&O Cruises managing director Carol Marlow added: “Dame Shirley is Britain’s most successful female artiste ever, a national treasure who defines the word ‘superstar’. We are Britain’s favourite and most successful cruise line and can trace our British history back longer than any other line. It’s a perfect match and I am sure on our naming day she will need no excuse to “get the party started!”

Adonia will be marketed at customers who like traditional cruising, with formal nights, classical music recitals, guest speakers, silver service dining and a dedicated card room.

Some 500 people are on the guestlist for the naming ceremony which takes place prior to the ship’s maiden voyage the next day around the Western Mediterranean.
