Singapore Airlines passengers and staff undergo contamination tests in Adelaide

Friday, 26 Jun, 2006 0

272 passengers and 14 crew on a Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore to Adelaide in addition to an undisclosed number of others meeting passengers, had to undergo contamination tests on Sunday morning after an unidentified yellow powder was found on luggage which came off the Singapore flight on the baggage carousel.

Adelaide airport authorities called in the airport’s own airport fire service and the Metropolitan Fire Service to deal with the substance, with resulting lengthy delays for passengers waiting to collect their luggage and affected passengers were quarantined with some given warm decontamination showers.

Singapore Airlines says it deeply regreted the inconvenience caused to customers as a result of the delay, but measures had to be taken for the proper identification and handling of what was possibly a hazardous material by the emergency services.

Singapore Airlines was working closely with Adelaide Airport, Metropolitan Fire Services and other authorities to provide as much information about contents of shipments on the aircraft and further investigations into how the substance came to be on the luggage will be carried out once it has been identified and dealt with.

Australian news agencies said initial testing showed the powder appeared to pose no threat and it appears that as of this morning it still has not been identifed and it may take a week to do so.
