Singapore on the wing
At Crossroads Café on the Singapore Marriott’s ground floor on busy Orchard Road, Western breakfasts are served until 1 PM, and both the lunch and dinner menus have such international options as salads, sandwiches, burgers, and Mexican wraps. A meal will cost you roughly between S$10 to S$35. It also offers meal and drink pairings; for example, a glass of chardonnay coupled with the grilled ahi tuna with a California roll and mustard aioli.
Da Dong was one of Chinatown’s first eateries, when it opened in 1928. It has a view of Chinatown’s intersections and markets, with good service and Cantonese food. Try the pork ribs, Peking duck, or steamed fish head. Dim sum service begins at 7 AM on weekends and holidays. A meal comes for under S$10 to S$20.
Across from Clarke Quay is Brewerkz which serves homemade burgers, fried calamari, pizza, beer-battered fish-and-chips, and buffalo wings. The service is speedy and the portions are huge. You can shoot pool indoors, or kick back with your food on the expansive patio. In 2004 Brewerkz’s English-style pale ale was awarded a gold medal in the Association of Brewers World Beer Cup. You can order from a late-night menu, which has finger foods, chicken Cobb salad, and spicy sausage sandwiches, on Friday and Saturday nights from 11 a.m. to midnight. A meal will set you back by S$10 to S$35.
A former colonial home in the Singapore Botanical Gardens, Au Jardin serves French cuisine. The extensive à la carte menu takes a backseat to the prix-fixe options. There’s the three-course table d’hôte and the awe-inspiring seven-course dégustation menu, which includes scallops with pistachio and coriander, Wagyu beef (a Japanese delicacy), and chocolate soufflé with earl grey ice cream. A meal here would be over S$50.
Aoki, a Japanese restaurant on Scotts Road, serves kaiseki (a formal banquet), sukiyaki (skillet-grilled beef and veggies), shabu shabu (hot pot), and sake sherbets. Fish is flown in from Tokyo’s prestigious fish market four times a week. A meal comes for anything from S$20 to over S$50.
