Singapore once again ranked Asia’s top convention city
In the latest ICCA Global Rankings 2007, Singapore has maintained its position as Asia’s Top Convention City for the 9th time and the Third Top Convention City in the World for the second consecutive year.
To strengthen Singapore’s position as a premium Business Travel and meetings, incentive travel, convention and exhibition (BTMICE) destination, the Singapore Exhibition and Convention Bureau (SECB), a group of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), has bolstered and injected vibrancy into the calendar of business events with newly created events such as BioMedical Asia and Singapore International Water Week.
Singapore will also host a series of inaugural tradeshows this year, such as the recently concluded BikeAsia, and the upcoming Japan International Apparel Machinery (JIAM) tradeshow and the firstever ITB Asia from 24 to 25 Oct 2008.
With the intention of transforming Singapore into an even more compelling business and leisure destination, the two Integrated Resorts remain on track with the opening of Marina Bay Sands in 2009 and Resorts World at Sentosa in 2010.
The Singapore Flyer, currently the world’s tallest observation wheel standing at a height of 165 metres, was officially opened on April 15, 2008, offering views of the Marina Bay area and environs. Singapore Flyer is available for corporate bookings and meetings.
The planned landscape and infrastructural enhancements to Singapore’s shopping street, Orchard Road, will start on April 28, 2008. The 10-month project worth €18 million (SGD 40 million) is expected to be completed in February 2009 and the rejuvenation work includes state-of-the-art lighting to illuminate Orchard Road’s tree-lined boulevard and new creative spaces for staging events, creating an integrated pedestrian mall experience for all visitors.
Singapore is also boosting its cruise capacity when the new International Cruise Terminal at Marina South becomes operational in 2010. The new cruise terminal will accommodate the new generation of larger cruise ships and will double Singapore’s cruise capacity, complementing the existing two berths at the Singapore Cruise Centre at HarbourFront.
