Singapore reasures river cruise tourists after fatal accident

Singapore’s iconic bumboat river taxis adhere to strict safety measures onboard and undergo annual checks, operator Singapore River Cruise said, following a fatal accident.
A boat burst into flames last week and boat captain Ong Hock Long had to leap into the water where he is thought to have drowned.
His body was retrieved from Marina Bay a day later and no passengers were onboard at the time.
"The management and staff of SRC wish to express our deepest condolences to the family of Mr Ong for their loss," a company spokesperson said.
"Since the incident, the company has been providing assistance to Mr Ong’s family, and will continue to do so in all possible ways at this difficult time for the family."
The company’s boats follow all Merchant Shipping Safety Regulations with annual checks and installation of safety equipment such as life jackets and fire extinguishers.
In addition the company said all boat captains are ‘professionally trained and competent to operate the boats and react in times of emergencies’.
