Singapore still mulling hosting 2020 GP race
A decision on whether this year’s Singapore GP Formula One race will take place will be made later this week.
Time is running out for a definitive decision about whether the September 20 race should go ahead, and an announcement will be made this week, said Singapore minister for trade and industry, Chan Chun Sing.
Local promoter Singapore GP is still in in talks with the Formula One organisation.
"As part of their contractual arrangements, they will have to have some studies on what is doable and what is not doable," Chan said.
Officials had already said the event would not go ahead without a live crowd in attendance.
However there has been a consensus that fans can be accommodated safely subject to various restrictions.
Officials are reviewing tenders for special arrangements to host a limited number of race-themed parties and events.
All tenderers were warned that proposals should factor in various health and safety protocols.
A final decision needs to be made pretty quickly.
"Being a street circuit, more lead time for planning and preparation is required, which includes procurement," the Singapore Tourism Board said.
