Six Senses Big Expansion Plans – VISION Exclusive & VIDEO

Monday, 04 Aug, 2008 0

In an exclusive VISION interview, Sonu Shivsadani, Chairman and CEO of Six Senses, unveiled major expansion plans for the luxury ecological resort and spa operator. Twelve regional hubs with up to ten properties each are envisaged, together with a major expansion of the stand-alone spas.

Six Senses, which operates the Six Senses Hideaways, Six Senses Latitudes, Soneva and Evasion brands, has identified a preferred business development model that involves hubs of between 5 and 10 properties each to benefit from the economies and efficiencies of scale. Hubs are envisaged in 12 regions – Thailand, Vietnam, the Maldives, South Indian Ocean, East Africa, the Middle East, South East Europe, South West Europe, Mexico and Central America, Brazil, North Caribbean and the Pacific.

The multi prize-winning resort operator (including “Tourism for Tomorrow” 2008) operates a unique management system which obviously has its rewards in guest satisfaction and financial benefits. Management, rather than hierarchical, is based on the physical nature of the Earth – there is an inner core (Mr Shivdasani and six others), a core (Mrs Shivdasani and 12 others) an inner sphere (39 senior management) and an outer sphere (those who deal directly with guests.

Although absolutely committed to sustainability, the group stints nothing in offering an ultra-luxury service to its guests in the great Asian tradition of perfection of hospitality. Six Senses attitudes are outlined in the acronym SLOW LIFE (Sustainable Local, Organic, Wholesome – Learning, Inspiring, Fun, Experiences)

Currently there are 19 Six Senses properties, 4 Soneva properties and 30 spas (of which one is on the “Christina O”. Not bad for a group which began with the necessity of developing a family-owned island. And a great start on the development towards the initial 120 establishments.

And Six Senses? Says the group: “The pyramid of six spheres used to identify Six Senses Spas, represents the philosophy that is fundamental to the human experience:

The foundation spheres represent the three primary senses of sight, sound and touch. The second level balances upon this foundation by satisfying the more acute senses of taste and smell. The apex sphere symbolizes a sense of elation discovered only by balancing the first five – the unique experience of all senses elevated beyond expectations.”

Sight, sound, touch, taste and smell are usually thought of as five senses. It looks as though Six Senses has harnessed its spirituality to provide the sixth and binding sense. The result – a harmonious organisation grounded in its Earthly expansion?
