Six Westjet passengers injured after emergency evacuation
Six passengers on a Westjet flight were injured Monday night after being diverted to Winnipeg, due to a ‘threat.’
Neither the carrier nor airport authorities disclosed what kind of threat it was, but was deemed serious enough for crew to deploy emergency evacuation slides on the tarmac.
Six passengers of the 54 on Flight 442 were injured using the slide, the airline said.
On landing, fire trucks, police and ambulances provided assistance and injured passengers were taken to hospital.
"The flight crew, in conjunction with our Operations Control Centre, made the decision to divert the aircraft to Winnipeg. In order to evacuate the aircraft as quickly as possible, the crew made the decision to deploy the emergency evacuation slides," said Westjet spokesman Robert Palmer.
Initial reports indicate six guests received non-life threatening injuries during the evacuation and were treated by emergency response officials on the ground."
"A number were taken to hospital for further treatment, accompanied by members of WestJet’s Special Assistance Team," he added.
The airline remains tight-lipped about the threat but the airport confirmed passengers were interviewed by police.
