Ski resorts under fire for exaggerating ski run length
Ski resorts have come under fire after a German cartographer claimed they are exaggerating the length of ski runs.
Christoph Schrahe used digital mapping to measure the slopes and claims on average resorts inflate the length of their runs by 34%.
Although he did add that some resorts like Kitzbuhel in Austria was ‘millimetre perfect’.
Chris Gill, editor of the guidebook Where to Ski and Snowboard, said the resorts offered some interesting responses in defence of the measurements.
Chris told the Sunday Times: "We put Christoph’s figures to some of the major resorts and asked them to explain their calculations.
"There were some interesting responses – that skiers do not even ski arcs but zigzag across pistes from one side to the other, or that where a run was divided by a rock or trees it was in fact two runs and should be measured twice."
Switzerland’s consumer authorities are reported to be considering taking action against some resorts.
Other resorts have corrected their results since Schrahe’s report while some have added ‘an approximate guide’ next to their figures.
