Sleet and snow likely to hamper getaway plans over next few days
Bad weather is causing dangerous conditions on the roads and there are warnings of delays to some flights, with conditions likely to last several days.
There are delays at Stansted this morning after the runway closed temporarily to be cleared of snow and ice, while last night Birmingham Airport advised passengers flying out this morning to leave more time for their journey and check for flight updates.
Luton has also advised passengers to check flight updates, with sleet and snow forecast in the area until about 2pm.
Travellers in and out of other airports may also expect delays to their journey as there have been hazardous driving conditions on many major roads overnight.
The southbound carriageway of the M1 was closed near Lutterworth after an accident, while another HGV jack-knifed in heavy snow on the M5 in Gloucestershire.
Over 24,000 homes have reportedly been left without power and there has been disruption to some train lines.
Getaway plans could be hampered over the next few days as the bad weather is expected until the New Year.
Snow is forecast in Wales, the Midlands and south west on Thursday morning, with northern England and Scotland set to see heavy snow on Friday and Saturday.
