Smithsonian hands out sustainable tourism awards
The Louisa May Alcott Orchard House in Massachusetts won a Smithsonian Magazine/Tourism Cares for Tomorrow 2005 Sustainable Tourism award.
The Orchard House, which since 1911 has preserved the Alcott legacy in literature and art, won in the “preservation” category.
The Black Sheep Inn Ecolodge in Ecuador won in the “conservation” category.
The 10-room lodge was built with sustainable techniques, including solar panels, compost toilets and rain water collectors. Guests there are also educated in conservation and sustainable living habits.
The Smithsonian awards have been given out for five years.
Other finalists included the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Maryland, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in New York, the Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa and the Chumbe Island Coral Park in Tanzania.
