Snow arrives in the Alps – better late than never
European ski resorts have finally got the snow they’ve been hoping for, and it just keeps on falling in North America. Here’s this week’s snow report. For more, go to Ski Club.
EUROPEAN WEATHER OUTLOOK
Winter has arrived, better late than never. The past few days has seen excellent snow fall, particularly in Austria, now its France, Italy and Switzerland’s turn. Coming up is a change in the direction of the flow of cold air. This change will, over the next 72 hours, finally bring sizeable snow falls to resorts around The Matterhorn and Mont Blanc Massif. Strong winds are prevailing in some areas of the European Alps and will likely stay moderate to strong during the storm. This will mean uneven distribution of snow throughout the entire south western Alps range. The east Italian resorts in the Sella Ronda will also see just under half a metre of new snow arrive. For the worried masses traveling to the Alps, fret no more. Over the weekend and into next week at time the visibility will be poor but the skiing will be fantastic.
The good news doesn’t stop for resorts in Germany either. The forecast is for more heavy snowfalls over the next three days. This week’s snowfalls should bed down a snow base to last the rest of the season, even the off piste areas will start becoming an option.
In Austria, briefly speaking the tap will stay on for the next three days with moderate to heavy snowfalls expected to continue. Beyond 72 hours the storm will slow down but conditions will stay cloudy with light snow.
The Pyrenees are getting some excellent snow fall currently and this will continue into the weekend. A great time to be skiing in the area.
NORTH AMERICA WEATHER OUTLOOK
There looks to be no end in sight for the incredible start to the season in North America as heavy snow is set to keep falling across the continent. There will be a definite slowdown, but a bit of new snow will keep things fresh.
Huge amounts of snowfalls were reported over the last six days, being especially strong in California but also intense in parts of Colarado, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. Some incredible powder days were on offer in many resorts.
The outlook for the next week is more snow but with a definite slowdown – nowhere near the mammoth levels we’ve been getting used to. It’s likely to be a dusting here and there for resorts in the U.S.A, whereas Canadian snowfalls will be concentrated on the west coast (especially up north).
