Some Kathmandu heritage sites to reopen this month
Following a high level meeting of tourism industry stakeholders and government officials, Nepal says some of its heritage sites in the Kathmandu valley will be ready to reopen in mid-June.
A devastating earthquake in April all but closed down Nepal’s tourism industry, claiming the lives of more than 8,000 people.
Mr. Bhesh Narayan Dahal, Director General of the Department of Archaeology confirmed Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swoyambhunath and Patan Durbar Square will welcome tourists again from June 15.
He added that the Boudhanath, Budhanilkantha and Pashupatinath sites are already safe enough to resume tourist activities now.
Suresh Man Shrestha, Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation is encouraging travel agent FAM trips and visits from travel media to emphasise Nepal tourism is open for business despite a long road ahead for reconstruction following the deadly earthquake.
