Southwest Airlines reveals Hawaii expansion plans

Wednesday, 29 Jul, 2019 0

Southwest Airlines has outlined its next phase of expansion in Hawaii.

Citing ‘robust’ demand, the airline will add departures from Sacramento and San Diego.

"We will offer service to the islands from both Sacramento and San Diego, as well as bring Southwest service to both Lihue, on Kauai, and Hilo, on the Island of Hawaii," Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said.

Lack of aircraft due to the 737 Max grounding is to blame for a delay in adding more Hawaii routes, Kelly said.

It will likely announce full details and open reservations next month.

Southwest made its eagerly awaited Hawaii debut earlier this year linking Oakland and Honolulu.

It also added services to Kahului, Maui, in April and San Jose-Honolulu flights in May.

Southwest also operates interisland routes including Honolulu to Kailua-Kona.
