Southwest plans Baltimore-Costa Rica flights
Southwest Airlines is expanding its international route network, going beyond Mexico and the Caribbean for the first time.
Southwest will begin daily flights out of Baltimore/Washington International to the Costa Rican capital of San Jose from March 7.
The carrier only began flying international routes in its own name two months ago, after absorbing subsidiary Air Tran’s network.
"We’re ready to add the adventure and beauty of Costa Rica to the more than 100 million customers who fly with us each year," said CEO Gary Kelly.
Our substantial presence in Baltimore/Washington is a natural place to do that by bringing nonstop access to new international markets."
Costa Rica will be the sixth country served by Southwest.
Southwest began flying from Baltimore in 1993 and is now the dominant airline there, with 204 daily flights to 60 cities.
Last month the airline accounted for 67.2% of all Baltimore traffic
