Southwest warns staff of ‘dynamic’ ATC issues amid shutdown

Friday, 10 Oct, 2025 0

Southwest Airlines has warned its staff to be ready to respond effectively to any major disruptions due to the government shutdown.

In a memo, employees are to ‘remain vigilant in ensuring operational reliability.’

Due to the shutdown, the air traffic control situation is ‘dynamic and could change rapidly at any ATC facility,” the airline wrote.

So far, Southwest has faced ‘manageable delays and cancelations.’

“Our performance continues to rank among the best in the industry.”

This week the FAA placed a temporary ground stop on flights at Nashville Airport due to air traffic control staff shortages.

There has also been disruption at other airports such as Newark and Hollywood Burbank Airport.

“Our priorities are safety. If we have additional sick calls, we will reduce the flow consistent with a rate that’s safe for the American people,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said this week.
