Spain slumps as non euro zone takes off for Lastminute
Non euro countries are proving more popular this summer than traditional holiday hotspots like Spain and the Balearics, research by Lastminute.com has revealed.
The online retailer claimed bookings for Tunisia – which has shed its downmarket image – have soared by 400% with Turkey trebling its sales. The Costa Brava and Costa del Sol however have plummeted by 40%.
Lastminute said customers are looking for new experiences and also recognising that travelling outside the euro zone is cheaper.
Head of holiday supply Matt Cheevers said: “Tunisia has shaken off its downmarket image and now thousands of people are taking advantage of five star holidays at three-star prices.
“Sales for Egypt have taken off over the past two years with the Red Sea grabbing the lion’s share of the growth.”
He predicted Croatia and Bulgaria would be among the 2006 winners.
