Spain to reveal impact of Madrid bombing
SPAIN will reveal the full impact of last month’s Madrid bombing on the tourism industry at the World Travel and Tourism Council Summit this weekend.
Officials from the public and private sector will spell out the effect the atrocity is likely to have on the economy and examine the future prospects for the travel industry. The results of a survey in which the views of 1,500 Spanish businesses were compiled will also be revealed.
Madrid’s economy and tourism development head Miguel Angel Villanueva will address delegates in Qatar along with Jose Luis Zoreda, chief executive of EXCELTUR, a membership organisation for Spain’s private sector.
If the UK is anything to go by, the tourism industry should rapidly bounce back. Operators said the bombing caused a sharp downturn in bookings – particularly over Easter – but was now returning to normal levels.
Short break specialist Cresta Holidays described it as a “blip”. “For a week to ten days we saw a downturn. Forward bookings slowed and some who had already booked cancelled,” said cities product manager Ian Ackland. “Sales in March were down 7% and Easter around 10%.” But the numbers were now returning to pre March 11 levels, he added.
