Budget carrier Spirit Airlines plans to muscle in on key hub airports in the south to compete with much bigger rivals Delta and American Airlines.

Spirit plans to open crew bases in Atlanta and Miami this year, creating hundreds of pilot and flight attendant jobs. Atlanta is Delta’s primary hub airport, while American Airlines operates 300 flights a day out of MIA.

Spirit and Frontier Airlines recently announced plans to merge.
