S’pore busts arrivals record in August

SINGAPORE – A new record in arrivals for the month of August has been set by Singapore.

That month, Singapore welcomed 911,000 visitors, representing a growth of 4.7% as compared to August 2006 – setting a new record for the number of visitor arrivals in the month of August across all years.

Visitor days were estimated to reach 3.6 million days, an increase of 14.4% in comparison to August 2006.

Indonesia (159,000), P R China (114,000), Australia (62,000), Japan (58,000) and India (56,000) were Singapore’s top five visitor-generating markets in August 2007. These markets accounted for 49% of total visitor arrivals for the month.

Visitor arrivals from China recorded all-time high of 114,000 visitors in August 2007, which surpassed the previous record of 113,000 set in July 2006. August is typically a peak travel month for visitors from China as it coincides with school summer holidays.

Singapore gazetted hotels were estimated to generate S$159.8 million in room revenue, representing an increase of 28.2% over August 2006 and setting a new record for the month of August.

The Average Room Rate (ARR) in August 2007 was estimated at S$198, representing an increase of 28.4% over August 2006. The Average Occupancy Rate (AOR) for hotels was estimated to reach 89% in August 2007, posting a 2.2 percentage point increase over August 2006. Both the ARR and AOR in Aug 07 were record highs for the month of August.
