Storm Eleanor causes flight cancellations
British Airways has cancelled some flights today as Storm Eleanor brings fales force winds and torrential rain to the UK and parts of continental Europe.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland until 6pm tonight.
It said Eleanor could bring winds up to 80 mph, which could disrupt transport, power supplies and cause flying debris.
British Airways said the storm is affecting some of its short-haul and domestic flights at Heathrow, while easyJet is warning of delays to its European flights due to windy weather elsewhere.
For safety reasons, National Air Traffic Services has to allow greater space between landing aircraft in strong winds and this has resulted in a reduced number of aircraft being allowed to land each hour at Heathrow, said BA
"This will mean a small reduction in our short-haul schedules at Heathrow and some delays to other flights," it added.
"The high winds may also delay the offloading of baggage at some airports throughout the day.
"We are sorry for the difficulties caused by the poor weather and will do all we can to minimise the effect it has on our operations including using larger aircraft on some routes to help customers whose journeys have been affected by the storm."
Gatwick airport also appeared to be suffering some delays this morning and Flybe warned of disruption to its Amsterdam flights from London City Airport due to poor weather in Holland.
