Strike leads to flight cancellations and disruption
Updated 11.50am, May 29
A 24-hour strike by Italian ground handlers has led to flight cancellations and disruptions.
UK airlines are reviewing their schedules after ground handling staff across Italy announced plans to strike from 00:00am local time on Friday, May 30.
In additiona, both airport and ground handling staff at Milan airports have scheduled a strike from 13:00 to 17:00 local time (12:00 to 16:00 GMT) tomorrow.
EasyJet said its flights to and from Milan Malpensa, Venice and Milan Linate airports will be affected including some cancellations.
The low cost airline said: "We are doing everything possible to minimise the impact to our customers and we have proactively taken the decision to cancel some flights to allow customers to re-organise their travel plans.
"For cancelled flights, all our customers will be offered a free of charge transfer to a new flight or a full refund.
"We strongly advise customers who wish to travel and want to rebook easyJet flights to AVOID rebooking flights on the same day (Friday 30th ) as there is some likelihood of further disruption that could cause further cancellations. "
British Airways said it would be reviewing its schedule this morning and will let customers know of any changes to the schedule ‘as soon as possible’.
Ryanair said it did not yet know the level of disruption expected, but added if the strike action goes ahead there is likely to be significant disruption to flights to/from and overflying Italy.
On its website, the airline said: "In the event that we are forced to reschedule or cancel flights due to this possible strike action, we will update this notice on Friday 30 May at 08.00hrs UK time.
"We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by this situation which is outside of our control."
The Foreign Office said: "A national strike will affect public transport on 29 and 30 May. The strike times will be determined locally and will vary from one city to another."
