Strikes hit flights to the Mediterranean

Saturday, 26 Sep, 2012 0

Passengers are being warned of delays to flights to parts of the Mediterranean today due to the latest 24-hour general strike in Greece.

Trade unions called workers out this morning for the first time since the conservative-led coalition government came to power in protest at new planning spending cuts of more than £9bn.

Large demonstrations are also planned for today.

As air traffic controllers will join the strike from 10:00 to 13:00hrs, flights to Greece and some other parts of Europe are being affected.

EasyJet has rescheduled dozens of flights, including services from the UK to Athens, the Greek islands and to Tenerife and Gibraltar.

The airline also warned passengers that the industrial action is likely to hit public transport in Greece and suggested that they allow extra time getting to and from airports.

"Although outside our control, easyJet would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused," it said.

Ferry and train services will also be affected, traders have been urged to close their businesses and museums will also be shut.

The Foreign Office is warning visitors to Spain to steer clear of any demonstrations after yesterday’s protests in Madrid turned violent. Further demonstrations are planned for this evening at 18:00hrs. These are expected to centre on the Plaza de Espana and Sol, in the heart of Madrid’s shopping district.
