Strong pound sees prices fall for city breaks

The strong pound has boosted tourists’ buying power across Europe and the USA, with prices falling in most cities.

The cost of accommodation, meals and drinks have fallen since last spring in 80% of the cities surveyed by the Post Office for its 2014 City Costs Barometer, due to the pound’s increased buying power.

Budapest has kept its position as the best value city break thanks to lower hotel costs and the stronger pound, with prices falling 11% year or year.

It is closely followed by Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, Warsaw and Prague.

Lisbon is the best value in the Eurozone at half the price of Rome, Amsterdam or Paris according to the research by Post Office Travel Money.

The biggest drop is in Copenhagen, where despite prices remaining high, the costs are nearly 30% lower than last year.

Stockholm is Europe’s most expensive city. New York is marginally higher priced but a fall in meal and accommodation charges have made it 11% cheaper than Boston.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money, said: "Make a shortlist of cities you are interested in and check both sterling’s value and local living costs, adding these to the flight and accommodation cost to see which comes out cheapest."
