Sun Country unveils largest ever route expansion

Minneapolis-St. Paul based Sun Country Airlines has announced its biggest ever network expansion with the addition of 19 seasonal routes.

Eight routes are being added at its MSP hub starting in the spring to Chicago O’Hare, Washington Dulles, Newark, Philadelphia, Providence, R.I., Sacramento, San Antonio and St. Louis.

The airline said it will add 160 jobs in the Twin Cities.

Each will be operated four times a week starting between April and June through late October depending on the route.

"We are going to carry about 40% more passengers this year than last," said CEO Jude Bricker.

One-way fares start from $49.

It also announced three new routes each from Portland, Ore and Nashville, as well as a trio of services out of Las Vegas McCarran International Airport to Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Anchorage, Alaska.

Sun Country is also adding seasonal Honolulu flights from San Francisco.

"Seasonal markets will make up the vast majority of our network in perpetuity and that’s because we carry leisure travelers," Bricker said.
