Survey finds confusion over airline baggage charges

Saturday, 26 Jul, 2010 0

Nearly 75% of holidaymakers questioned by Lastminute.com said they plan to fly with much smaller bags or just hand luggage in order to avoid charges and possible fines.

The survey found over 40% are now confused by new rules on taking bags onto an aircraft.

One fifth said they had been caught out by new stringent regulations and have had to pay a fine.

Ryanair charges the most to check in bags, followed by Bmibaby.

Here is a chart showing the average costs of carrying a single bag within the hold on a low cost airliner (flying short haul).

The data was sourced from MoneySupermarket.com April 2010. The first figure represents the cost of a one-way flight, the next is for a return.

Jet 2 £12 £24
Thompson £11.50 £23
Flybe £10 £20
Easyjet £9 £18
Monarch £13 £26
Aer Lingus £4 £8
Thomas Cook £8 £16
BMI Baby £14 £28
Ryanair £20 £40

Average £11.27 £22.55
