Survey reveals who will recover first after political turmoil

Tourism to Egypt is bouncing back faster than Tunisia, according to a survey conducted by travel portal Easyvoyage.

More than 50% of respondents said they would go to Egypt within the year whereas only 20% would holiday in Tunisia.

Operators are offering slashed deals on both destinations, with Thomas Cook offering £299 per person for seven nights in Egypt and Airtours has £185 per person for a week in Tunisia.

Cosmos is offering seven nights in Tunisia from March 6 all-inclusive at the three-diamond Hotel Dar Khayam from £169 per person and seven nights from March 7 at the Hotel Gaddis in Luxor for £295 per person.

The survey says the Med is reaping some of the benefits of the unrest in the Middle East and North Africa with tour operators reporting that Spain, Greece and Turkey are seeing a spike in bookings right now.

Easyvoyage president Jean-Pierre Nadir said: “Britons, especially those travelling with children, are always on the look out for new destinations but as always, the price tag is incredibly important.

“All-inclusives remain popular and holidaymakers are benefitting from great deals this summer. Our survey shows that Egypt will bounce back relatively quickly, helped by the fact that the popular Red Sea resorts remain largely unaffected.

“Unfortunately Tunisia will take longer, knowledge of the destination is less and potential holidaymakers are being enticed elsewhere.”

According to the survey, more than half of respondents said they would not go to Tunisia not because of the recent uprising but because they did not know enough about the destination.
