Survey shows low take up of in-flight Wi-Fi services

The vast majority of US air travelers are unwilling to pay for in-flight Wi-Fi, TripAdvisor’s latest travel survey says.

Analyzing results from 4,300 respondents, the company says 90% of flyers "rarely or never" purchase Wi-Fi plans, which can range from $5 an hour up to $16 a day.

Only 3% of travelers said they always use in-flight Wi-Fi.

"The fact that 90 percent of flyers report rarely or never purchasing in-flight Wi-Fi is likely due to flyers’ frustration over airline fees," said a TripAdvisor spokesperson.

The survey showed that airline fees was the second biggest complaint for air travelers after uncomfortable seats.

Almost three-quarters of respondents bemoaned the limited legroom which topped the list as travelers’ biggest frustration.

The survey also showed that flyers are overwhelmingly against the use of cellphones during a flight.

It said 81% would oppose the FAA allowing in-flight phone calls on planes.

Air travelers using mobile devices to check flight status, check in for flights, and for trip planning increased by more than 10% over the year, the survey said.
