Has sustainable tourism made the progress it should have done & will recession make it harder

Over the last few years we have witnessed radical changes in our global society in all sectors and lifestyles. Recession tourism is now a travel trend, which evolved by way of the world economic crisis and can be defined by low-cost, high-value experiences taking the place of once-popular generic retreats but how does this affect travel’s role in responsibility?

Reports have shown that backpacking and Educational/Volunteer tourism have been the most resilient, withstanding the economic crisis better than others, but is this enough to keep sustainability at the top of the travel agenda?

Join the Tourism Society for an evening with the experts to get up to date with the latest trends, changing consumer patterns and practical advice to keep your business and travelling competitive and responsible in these challenging times.

Chair: Graham McKenzie, TravelMole
Confirmed Panellists:
John Telfer, Product Director, Explore
Marilyn Larden, Vice President UK & Europe, Sustainable Travel International
Julie Middleton, Industry Programmes Manager, Travel Foundation

Debate at the Tourism Society 17th July 2012
