Sustainable travel has triple bottom line

Monday, 29 Sep, 2005 0

Sustainable Travel International released a newly revised version of its Guide to Sustainable Tourism.

“The improved and updated Guide is better designed to provide step-by-step guidance to travel-related companies that wish to establish systems for managing their impacts,” said the Colorado-based agency.

A company’s success has been measured historically in terms of the financial bottom line.

“Operating in a sustainable manner requires companies to consider their influence in not one but three areas: the environment, the social-cultural needs of the people in the places they visit, and their economic impact,” says the organization.

This triple bottom line approach supports the notion that the private sector should be playing a key role in environmental protection.

That’s the question the organization answers in its new guide.

The publication provides practical tips on designing sustainability policies, as well as measuring and managing them.
