Taiwan pilot union seeks working hours reform after pilot death
A Taiwan pilots union has called on the government to look at working hours and rest periods after a pilot died while on duty last week.
A pilot for Mandarin Airlines, a China Airlines subsidiary, suffered a suspected cardiac arrest and died.
The man, named Lui, was just 35 years old.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) should look at revising the Aircraft Flight Operation Regulations to prevent airlines from overworking pilots, the Taoyuan Union of Pilots said.
The airline said the pilot had just reported for duty after a break of more than 30 which meets current regulations.
The CAA director-general Lin Kuo-hsien said Liu’s medical history did not show any causes for concern.
Still, the airline has been ordered to submit a report on Lui’s health before and after he reported for duty.
There have also been calls by members of the Taiwan legislature’s transportation committee to increase mandatory health checks for pilots under 40.
Currently a physical exam is required only once a year.
Legislator Chen Su-yueh would like to see it increased to once every six months.
