Tale of two troubled tour operators
A financially-troubled tour operator based in Washington cancelled all of its riverboat cruises while, in a separate incident, a Hempstead, NY-based tour company operator was arrested.
The Seattle-based Great American Journeys cancelled all its Northwest riverboat cruises for the 2006 season. The company owes thousands of dollars to travel agents in unpaid commissions, according to the Seattle Times.
Owner Douglas Toms has laid off most of his staff but says he hopes to start operating again next year.
Another tour operator in trouble, Jerry Cummings was arrested for allegedly defrauding at least 40 clients of Magic Carpet Travel of Canada, according to Diane Peress with the Nassau County, NY, District Attorney’s office.
Mr Cummings, out on bail, is being charged with grand larceny and “scheming to defraud.”
