Tassie counts the loss of Spirit 111
It is estimated the loss of Spirit of Tasmania III will cost 150 jobs and $15 million a year in tourism revenue.
Tourism Tasmania has released a report on the impacts of the sale of the Sydney ferry.
After the Spirit of Tasmania III stops sailing in August, there will be 9,000 less visitors from New South Wales and Queensland a year.
That means the industry will lose $15 million in tourism spending and about 150 jobs.
The survey found estimated total visitor expenditure to be $1.146 billion.
Budget papers showed that Treasury expected a drop in total visitor expenditure to $1.12 billion in 2006-07.
But Tourism Tasmania says the biggest impact will be from a decrease in advertising in NSW and Queensland.
TT-line has been spending $6 million a year on marketing Tasmania, which has lead to a 14 per cent increase in both air and sea visitors.
Liberal Opposition Tourism spokeman Rene Hidding said the Government needed a new strategy.
“All we’ve seen so far is the closure of tourism centres in Sydney and Melbourne, the scrapping of Spirit III and the reduction of Qantas services to the North-West,” he said.
