Tempo flags new luxury train for India
SYDNEY – Tempo Holidays has launched in Australia the Maharajas’ Express, India’s newest ultra-luxury train.
The 24-carriage Maharajas’ Express, which travels between Mumbai and Kolkata via Delhi, will be “absolutely uniqueâ€, according to Nigel Loveday, Tempo Holidays’ general manager product and commercial, setting new standards exploring India by rail,
“This will be a very stylish, stunning product, the most exciting new development of rail travel in a country so rich in history, cultures, food and scenery,†said Loveday.
“As with the rail travel style of the Maharajas of old, there will be a sense of royalty about this train,†he said.
Tempo Holidays has opened bookings for the Maharajas’ Express services that start in January 2010.
The train will operate northbound from Mumbai to Delhi over eight days and then Delhi to Kolkata over 7 days. From Kolkata the train will operate southbound journeys over the same sectors.
The Maharajas’ Express is operated by Royale India Rail Tours Ltd, a joint venture of The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC), the tourism arm of the state-owned Indian Railways, and travel company Cox & Kings, which owns Tempo Holidays.
The services are: eight-day Princely India from Mumbai to Delhi priced from $7651 per person twin share and the seven-day Royal India in the reverse direction from $6558; the seven-day Classical India from Delhi to Kolkata priced from $6558 and the eight-day Celestial India in the reverse direction is from $7651.
Prices include cabin, all meals (including wine and beer with dinner) and escorted excursions, complimentary tea, coffee and mineral water on board and porterage at railway stations.
