Terror suspect nabbed in New Jersey after shootout

A man suspected of a planting a series of bombs in Manhattan and New Jersey was arrested yesterday after a gun battle with police.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, a 28-year-old naturalized US citizen born in Afghanistan, was spotted by a businessman sleeping in a doorway of a bar in Linden, New Jersey, yesterday morning.

Police had earlier sent out a ‘wanted’ alert to millions of local cellphones.

When police arrived, he shot at two officers, who then returned fire, shooting him in the leg.

He was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment.

Investigators believe he is ‘directly linked’ to at least eight explosive devices used over the weekend, including an explosion in the Chelsea district of New York on Saturday evening which injured 29 people.

He has been charged with five counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

"We have every reason to believe this was an act of terror," New York mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference.

de Blasio said no other individuals were being sought with authorities believing he worked alone.

Manhattan US attorney Preet Bharara said there was ‘no indication that there’s a cell operating in the area or in the city.’

Security in New York has been stepped up following the attacks, which come just as Manhattan hosts world leaders at the United Nations general assembly.
