Terrorist attack on airport kills more than 20
A terrorist attack on Karachi airport has left more than 20 people dead and others injured.
As many as 28 have been reported dead by media, including security guards from the Airport Security Force (ASF) and airline workers. Most staff and passengers were evacuated.
The army said it had taken control of Jinnah International Airport’s old terminal following all 10 attackers being killed but the BBC reports that gunfire has resumed.
Flights have been suspended and diverted elsewhere. The Foreign Office said the airport is closed until further notice.
Pakistan’s Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
"We carried out this attack on the Karachi airport and it is a message to the Pakistan government that we are still alive to react over the killings of innocent people in bomb attacks on their villages," Shahidullah Shahid, a Taliban spokesman, was quoted as saying by Reuters.
The gun battle between the gunmen and army commandos lasted more than five hours overnight, officials said, after the airport terminal used for cargo and VIP operations was stormed by two teams of five gunmen using fake ID.
Karachi has been a target for many insurgent attacks.
Gunmen attacked the Mehran naval base in 2011, killing 10 personnel and destroying two aircraft in a 17-hour siege.
