Texas cracks down on resort fees

Friday, 17 May, 2023 0

The Lone Star State is getting tough with hotels over resort fees.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has agreed a settlement with Marriott.

Marriott will now display all resort fees prominently and boost full price transparency in the booking process and on all ads.

“In recent years, travelers have been caught by surprise with costs much higher than the room rates they believed they had booked,” Paxton said.

Marriott’s voluntary agreement discloses all fees, although the company denied it violated any consumer protection laws.

“Marriott is now taking proactive steps to promote price transparency,” Paxton added.

“Other major hotel chains have defended their deceptive practices, and they will be facing the full force of the law”.

Texas is now targeting Hyatt Hotels Corp.

It filed a lawsuit alleging violation of state consumer protection laws and misleading consumers with hidden fees.

It says Hyatt does not include all mandatory fees in its advertised room rates.
