THAI cracks down on VIP perks

BANGKOK – Thai Airways International executive chairman and a member of the board, Wallop Bhukkanasut, resigned this week.

TTR Online says a board committee is investigating allegations that he misused his authority.

Wallop has been accused of using his position to gain 398 kg of free excess baggage (30 items) and allegedly avoiding Customs checks on his return to Bangkok from Tokyo on November 14.

His letter of resignation, dated January 3, covers all positions he held at THAI including board membership of Nok Air, the post of THAI executive chairman and other committee positions. He had already retired from the airline in 2008.

THAI board chairman, Ampon Kittiampon, said, “This will be a new benchmark for the organisation’s work ethics. Taking this case as an example, the airline will revise procedures and regulations regarding privileges given to VIPs. The parameters will be clear and precise.”

Wallop has denied any wrong doing, claiming critics are campaigning to discredit him.
