Thailand restarts plan to introduce ‘tourist fee’
Thailand plans to restart plans to impose a tourist fee next year. A fee of THB300 per arrival was approved but never implemented due to the Covid pandemic. It is now back on the table and the government is proposing hiking it to THB500 per traveller.
It was first proposed as a way to develop tourism infrastructure and maintain tourism destinations around the country. Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn said the extra THB200 will help ‘transform’ Thailand tourism industry into a ‘high value’ sustainable one rather than mass market.
