. Thailand strengthens tourism security after bomb scares
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has put all government agencies and security services on high alert after several explosive devices were successfully defused.
At least two suspects are in custody.
A number of bombs were placed in tourist areas.
Authorities said four were found and defused in Phuket.
It included one near the international airport and at Patong Beach.
Additionally, two other devices were neutralised in the tourist area of Krabi.
The motive for the bombs is still unclear although the suspects are from the restive Pattani province in the south.
According to police, the suspects said devices were not primed to explode but were to instill fear and disrupt Thailand’s tourism industry.
The Prime Minister has assured Thais and foreign tourists the country is safe and a security presence is being stepped up in tourist areas and cities.
In response, Australia issued a fresh travel advisory: “There’s an ongoing risk of terrorism in Thailand. Popular tourist areas may be the target of terrorist attacks anywhere across Thailand, including Bangkok and Phuket”
“Travellers should exercise a ‘high degree of caution.”
Australia’s ‘reconsider your need to travel’ warning remains in place in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces in the far-south of Thailand where insurgents have carried out attacks.
