The Thailand government has earmarked about THB400 billion ($11 billion) for a nationwide airport development programme over the next 10 years to keep up with demand for air travel.

The government wants to make Thailand a larger regional aviation hub and increase capacity to about 277 million passengers a year, said Kobsak Pootrakul, vice minister at the Prime Minister’s office.

Thailand welcomed 32.6 million travellers in 2016 and has set a target for more than 34 million this year.

Tourism receipts now account for more than 10% of Thailand’s GDP.
