The Caribbean lauded for green credentials
The Caribbean is rated among the top performing regions in the world for sustainable tourism according to certification body Green Globe.
Green Globe CEO Guido Bauer has just returned from the Caribbean Travel Marketplace in Jamaica, the region’s largest annual travel trade event, and says the Caribbean tourism industry has a robust commitment to conserving natural resources and strong eco-awareness in the wider community.
"It is a huge topic in the Caribbean, and we are happy to inspire everybody in the hospitality industry to join the green trend. I am very proud to see that we are approaching 100 members in the Caribbean alone," he said.
During the event the Green Globe team met with tourism ministers and key industry figures to discuss sustainable initiatives and the certification process.
The greening of the Caribbean has proved a hit with tourists with ecotourism activities well established, accessible and often lucrative.
Besides this, the Caribbean has invested heavily in a greener future.
During 2013, airports in St Kitts and the Dominican Republic upgraded their solar energy capabilities and with the latter, solar is expected to support over 50% of the airport’s entire energy needs.
Green Globe Certification is a global accreditation that rates travel and hospitality businesses on set criteria for sustainability, environmental impact, cultural and social responsibility.
